Preliminary Task Analysis

During the preliminary task I took the role of leading mostly the camera work and working the position in which we would need to film, in order to try make our angles as precise as possible, I also briefly help with directing the editing however Sarangan took most part of the lead with editing the task. However, because we didn't have much time to film we never write a storyboard or script this made it quite difficult to film because we had to improvise for the most part and didn't have a guide as to what we wanted to film. The camera work in our preliminary was not particularly effective, during filming we took only a few different types of shots, shot reverse shot, match on action, close-up, and an over the shoulder shot.

Also by having a a number of shots for one scene it made the editing process much easier as there was more footage to choose from. In our preliminary task I believe the match on action was executed well for example when person 1 was entering the room at the beginning we showed her walking up to the door and reaching for the doorknob then a close-up of her hand opening the door. However I do think we followed the 180 degree rule but I do not think it was clearing shown.

Shot reverse shot was executed during the dialogue sequence when person 1 and person 2 was having a conversation. In spite of all of this in order to improve the preliminary task I would create a script and a storyboard in order to make the process of filming easier and would have written out which shots we was going to execute and how we could position the camera in order for it to be effective.

Preliminary task analysis

I done my Preliminary task outside school in a 'Creams'. I was acting but also directing. By doing this I had a great impact in learning new things, but most of the important thing i learned was that it was very hard to be a director as the role of the director is to see every shot and editing is done correctly. But also it was most hard as i was acting in directing in the same time so i had to be very focused in acting but also looking at every shot and camera work that we were doing as i had to know if everything is done correctly. There are many different types of camera work that we had to do for example we had to do editing and different shot types. In my opinion my group did participate but as our work did get lost we had to make it again, so I believe that in the first take of the preliminary task everyone did participate although in the other one mostly only two people did participate. That's why I think that if everyone did participate equally in the second take of the preliminary task then it would had been better also i think if we did add more editing and more different type of shoots then it would look more professional and attractive. I will also improve by being careful what on the characters but also camera work so it can look more professional and attractive. Although it will look better and more catchy for the audience. Also I would improve the scrip so its more reasonable and understandable. Before i produce my film opening i think i should learn more about director techniques but also learn more about the other roles such as editing. 

Preliminary Task Analysis

My group for the preliminary task was made up of myself, Mitali and Nikita. Nikita took the task of filming the raw footage, as well as casting our actors, while me and Mitali edited the preliminary together on iMovie. One problem with this was that there was little communication between the group, which meant that me and Mitali were uninformed on any storyboarding for the preliminary. This meant that me and Mitali simply had to work with the raw footage we were given. Something to learn from this would be for there to be more communication between group members, especially during the planning period.
The raw footage included all the footage needed for the preliminary task except one piece, which was footage of Person 1 walking into the room. This may have limited the effectiveness of the match on action shot, as although there was footage of Person 1 walking toward the door and of Person 1's hand turning the handle, we could not have any footage of Person 1 continuing into the room.
The preliminary task went well because not only did it allow me to practise my editing skills, but it allowed me to understand that the more types of shots involved, the more raw footage is needed, which makes the production process more lengthy. For example, in order to use shot reverse shot, the same conversation between Person 1 and Person 2 needs to be filmed three times: once as a two shot, second as a head shot of Person 1 and third as a head shot of Person 2.
The preliminary could also have been improved if we had included more shots to make the preliminary interesting, as what we had, to me, appears to be the bare minimum.

Jayendra: Hey

Esom: Hey, have you seen the new hunger games movie yet?

Jayendra: No, did you go watch it?

Esom: Yeah, it was so good.

Jayendra: I’ve read the book and I didn’t actually like it.

Esom: What are you talking about? It’s the best one in the series.

Jayendra: No, the first one was the best. After that, it just went downhill.

Esom: Are you being serious?

Jayendra: Yeah, I don’t understand why everyone likes it so much. I think everybody just likes Jennifer and Josh and so they “like” the movie; just because they’re in there.

Esom: No, it’s got nothing to do with her specifically. It’s the story itself, it’s so exciting and inspiring.

Jayendra: It’s boring.

Esom: And each time there’s a new one, it just gets better. Plus the characters are so well-written and their backstories are so sad.

Jayendra: It’s mentioned once, then they never mention it again. The books are pretty bad, the movies are even worse.

Esom: That’s not true, do you know how many people went to the premiere? Would they go watch a movie that’s boring?

Jayendra: I think the movie people just bribe them, just to pretend that people are excited because in reality, everybody else apart from you is just waiting for the series to be over you know.

Esom: No, that’s too far. I don’t want to talk to you.

Analysis of existing preliminary task

The First student preliminary task I looked at was by Persona Pictures. The task starts with a pan upwards on a whiteboard, which then blurs into a classroom where we can only see the feet of students. Through the clip we can see they are taking a exam and there’s close up’s of a students face. The student then walks into another classroom where match on action is used. The student then sits down with another student and talks about maths the test he recently took where shot reverse shot is sued. He then exits the room. The task used match on action effectively where it was appropriate. For example when he was walking up the stairs and when he opened the door to enter the classroom. It looked effective, as the timing of the action was right. They also included a over the shoulder shot which looked effective and it make the use of 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot quite effective. In my opinion the task was successful as it wasn’t boring compared to my own preliminary task. It had movement, which created a story whereas in mine there were two actors who were just talking to each other. Another factor that was successful was the use of sound. Although the soundtrack didn’t fit exactly how he was feeling, it created the sense of the task being realistic. It also make the task much more interesting to watch. However a problem I found was that the camera was very shaky when he was walking from one classroom to another. This could have been improved by using a steadicam or by having smoother movements.

The second preliminary task I looked at started off with a establishing shot. It included many tracking shots, which followed the character walking. Again there’s a effective use of match on action as he’s walking up the stairs and as he opens the door as the timing is right. They also use angles such as high angle, which makes the task look much professional. They included shot reverse shot as they were having the conversation which shows they stuck to what the preliminary task asks for. Something they did well was the good use of the soundtrack. There’s a intense soundtrack right from the beginning of the clip until he enters the class. This suggests how he’s feeling. The beat sounds like a increased heartbeat which he may be feeling as he’s late to his class. Another successful factor in this preliminary task was the use of transitions. They included transitions when the camera changed angles and shots. This made the task flow much better as there weren’t any noticeable jumps, which made the task, look much professional. They also putted some thought into the costumes the actors wear. The student was wearing a hoodie whereas the teacher was wearing a smart shirt and tie. This again helps us to see who’s superior and makes it look professional. Again this is much better compared to my own preliminary task, as I had no sounds or transitions, which make my preliminary task boring and jumpy. Something this preliminary task could improve was on making the 180-degree rule explicit as there wasn’t a clear on.

My job role in the making of the preliminary task was to help Sonia with the editing of it. By doing this i learnt it’s hard to edit and put clips together with may be different from each together for example, the first shot the person already puts the hand on the handle but it is repeated again with a closeup of him opening the door. This is noticeable when you watch it and it cannot be cut out or else it would look odd. I believe the group did carry out adequate pre-production as the characters in the clip knew what exactly they had to do and say which allowed the process of filming it faster. In my opinion the camera work was quite good because we included many shots including close up, shot reverse shot and also match on action. The task could have been better if we included more shots to make it more interesting as it looked very boring since it had no movement. We could have used transitions to make the task flow much better as there was jumps. As a group we could have planned the task out better as one person done all the filming in the group and me and sonia done the editing. There was little communication between the group which made our product the way it came out. Before the production of my film opening i will need to practice my editing techniques so that the film opening flows.
