Shivani Production Log

Production log

Week One (5 Oct - 11 Oct)

The first-week miss did decide our groups for the preliminary task which did include Tavana, Me, Vithusya and Krupa. We had to make two videos as our fist video did get lost or deleted by the other years by mistake. So on the making of our second preliminary task only two people did participate the most which were me and Tavana  because we did go out of the school to make our clip and we were the only ones that were able to make it, as the other two people in our group didn't come and didn't even participate in the editing process.

Week Two (12 Oct - 18 Oct)

I was put in a different group to make an opening scene which did include me, metal, Sonia and ayaan. We had to decide a production name and logo and produce an ident. For our company name we decide Pomegranate studios, for this we had to produce logos, each of us in the group had to make one, the best one would be our logo.  Also, we did decide an opening scene that we would want to remake it. As a group, we made a shot list which included the timings of the scenes but also the costume. My role on this was to help out in the editing part so I could put every scene together to make a clip.

Week Three (19 Oct - 25 Oct)

Now we had to decide which script we would do, there was two best ones that my other group member did it, this was a very hard decision as both of them were good , so we thought how would it be effective for us both of the scripts by looking at the locations and props that we had to use in the script. Then we chose Sonia's script as we did prefer the storyline and the location that would be used. Everyone had their won roles, I was the co-producer, even though we could help each other out after when we would be creating our opening scene. We had to do a script breakdown of our first script draft that we had as a group, this gave us more deeply about the scenes, props, character, etc which allowed us to understand better and make it easier for us when we are shooting.
--

In this week we went to check our location for a test shoot, This allowed us to know more about our location such as if we could do some of our scenes how we want to and  how/where we would position our actors. After looking at this we thought about changes that could be made, one of the changes can be an example which before we wanted Jatin to spit our his food from his mouth, but then we thought that it wouldn't be a good idea so we change it to him taking it out from his mouth to his hands then putting it in the bin.

I analyzed Ant- man which also included me talking about the MECS. All together as a group we decided who is genre important to and who does it help the most in the industry. Also, as a group we decided which genre we should for the opening scene, this did create a lot of confusion, although we chose a psychological thriller. However we knew that this would be very hard for us as we don't have sufficient technology and material needed, so it would be more time spent on this which would be harder was us to manage the time.

Week Four (26 Oct - 2 Nov)

We had to choose two movies that did match with our genre, so I chose Paranormal Activity and Secret Window(psychological thriller). Also, in this, we had to research of students opening scenes as it would allow us to know the pros and cons of making this genre openings and how it would help us when we are making our opening scene.

Week Five (3 Nov - 9 Nov)

In this week we had to research about the actors that may appear in our genre movies (psychological thriller), which would help us to decide what sort of actors we would have in our opening scene as we would know why would the most common actors in the film psychological thriller would be chosen (maybe because of their looks, personality, etc).

I also did research about iconography and conventions of the genre psychological thriller, this gave me some images in my minds if I think about this genre, this helped us to decide how to present our opening scene by adding a different type of props and other conventions. After me, Sonia and mitali had to research opening credits in films, in this three of us looked at 3 different movies that associate with our genre, I did for the movie "Paranormal Activity" and presented it by taking screenshots of each opening title presented.

Week Six (10 Nov - 16 Nov)

We had to research about story lines and conventions for our genre and theories that may be applied, we split this task, which allowed each of us to do research about four of them, that were Todorov, Barthes, Propp and Levi Strauss. The one I did it was Barthes theory, it suggested that text of the film can be open which means that there will be a twist in the story and other is closed which means that there is only one way of narrating the story, and I did research about the representation of gender to find any conventions with our genre as it will connect to our target audience.

Week Seven (17 Nov - 23 Nov)

Our research was still going on as we had to think about our target audience. All of our group members had to do research about our target audience, I couldn't do it with my group as there were clashes happening because of my school timings, so I did this research alone. This research had to be referred in demographic and psychographic of our target audience, demographic is about class, location, an education age, race, sex and psychographic is about hobbies, beliefs, interests and values. After this, I did other research for our target audiences that allowed me to know more about our target audience as what would they expect from our genre. I also created social media pages to attract our target audiences to view our opening scene.

We also had to do research about directors that do psychological thriller movies, this would allow us to know which theories are used most of the times in psychological thriller and if they follow any other specific style.

In this week, each of our group members had to come out with opening scene ideas. I had two ideas for our opening scene, then I had to choose the best one so I can write a script draft for the film opening.

Week Eight (24 Nov - 30 Nov)

During this week i analysed the Script and scene analysis, which coevered if there any Foreshadowingin the script, Recurring motifs,Scene transitions, Counterpoint, Repetition, Contrast, Special effects, visual effects, stunts, ect.

After  we all decided what role each of us would have, i was the opening scene producer. Also i done a script breakdown in order to show so we could undertstand our script better and what/how everything would work in our locations and scenes, by this all of us as a group made changes and any othr improvements that could be applied.

Week Nine (1 Dec - 7 Dec)

In this week individually we had to do script and scenes analysis of our opening scene analysis, I had to find if there is any foreshadowing happening in the script, Recurring motifs, Scene transitions, Counterpoint, Repetition of dialogues, Contrast, Action and stunts, Special effects, Visual effects and locations that were going to be used. This was very useful as we would know more about our script and what would happen when we would be shooting our opening scene.

Week Ten (8 Dec - 14 Dec)

I did research about production designer and editor in more depth, to help us out in our shooting as we would know more about mise-en-scenes and when we are editing our opening scene.

After we had to find a suitable location for our script,I found locations that we could use for our opening scene. We all went to check this location as a group, the location would be a medium class house. Although i did found other option as well, because we wanted to try out a different location to have a backup option. location to have a backup option.

Week Eleven (15 Dec - 21 Dec)

We did go to our locations again to make a location recce, which would talk about the pros and cons of the location and how we would be using our locations. As we then that we also had to do a story board showing our scenes and shooting script that would be talking about specific scenes and which type of camera work we may use. Also that we had to produce a shot list, that would help us to ensure if we did everything correctly and every shot that we need and a shot blocking that me, mitali and Sonia produced by showing anything that may be clocking in our shooting time such as any objects and people.

Week Twelve (22 Dec - 28 Dec)

In this week I and mitali did our characters casting, to see if any character could fit in our opening scenes, we done this with the help of our script breakdown as it did give us more knowledge of how our character should be in the scenes. After me, Sonia and mitali produced a risk assessment sheet, which did outline any risks that would happen and how we would prevent them. Along this we produced a production schedule, that was a guideline for us as it would show what would be done each day of our opening scene shooting.

Week Thirteen (29 Dec - 4 Jan)

---

Week Fourteen (5th Jan - 11th Jan)

---

Week Fifteen (12th Jan - 18th Jan)

---

Week Sixteen (19th Jan - 25th Jan)

This week we went to our locating to do our test shot, this allowed us to know if thhere was enough space for the camera moevements and characters. If there was any probelems that we may face in our shotting day we had to make changed about them for example when jatin had to spit the food out of his mouth, we though that woudndt be right and the camera angle woudnt work out, so we changed to him just taking the food out of his mouth to his hand and put it in the bin after.

Week Seventeen (26th Jan - 1st Feb)

Our first shot day was 31st of January. W e were very pleased by our shots, however when we started editing on the editing website Adobe Premier Pro, most of the footage were missing and some were very shaky. After, looking at some of scenes i also though it could be changed and improved, for example when Jatin is looking at the baby's memories the coach and all the products of the baby, first the teddy bear was in the coach, but I though if we put it near the other products it would be more meaningful, as first when we would be doing the mid shot of jatin looking at everything we could focus after the camera in the teddy bear and the other products, so the audiences can realise that he is thinking about the baby.

Week Eighteen (2nd Feb - 8th Feb)

This week we had to go and reshot all the scenes, so we had to find an appropriate and close location. I started asking my friends and one of them allowed us to do our shooting at his house. This house was suitable for our opening scene, as it did look like a working class house.

Week Nineteen (9th Feb - 15th Feb)

This week we went to our new location to do our final opening scene shoot. This allowed us to plan any possible changed to our script, as this location was completely different and new. We couldn't use the room scene of jatin as the rooms didn't have the props that we needed and didn't look suitable for our scene. In this, i had the role to produce our opening scene.

After, I helped out for the editing, which was being done by Adobe Premier Pro, this was very difficult for us as we didn't know how to use the website effectively, but as the time went we started knowing more about the software which made it easier for us to use it and we added the voice of our actress shouting the baby's name, other sounds were produced by GarageBand. For our background song, i tried creating it by using different objects to create a car crashing sound. Our group altogether, also did the titles to make it look more professional.

Week Twenty (16th Feb - 22nd Feb)

Finally, this week we finished our editing process, we uploaded our final edit video of our opening scene on Youtube and embedded it into our blog. After, I started doing my 7 evaluation questions.
